Keep the Work Moving

Store Manager Manual · page 5 of 12

Busy is not the same as controlled. The operation has to be working on the right things in the right sequence. Keep turnaround close to 24 hours.

Know the status

You do not need every detail in your head, but you should have a truthful picture of the important work:

  • What is waiting.
  • What is in process and who owns it.
  • What is complete but still needs verification or release.
  • What is urgent, promised, or connected to a waiting customer.
  • What is blocked and why.
  • What will become the next problem if nothing changes.

Find the bottleneck

When work starts piling up, do not only look at how hard everyone is working. Ask where the flow stopped.

The constraint may be labor, keys, approvals, vehicle movement, equipment, training, one overloaded employee, poor assignment, rework, conflicting priorities, or missing information.

Find the constraint and work on that.

When demand is bigger than capacity

This will happen. Do not quietly accept everything, hope somehow it gets done, and then announce failure at the deadline.

  1. Confirm the real priorities and deadlines.
  2. Stop lower-consequence work from controlling the day.
  3. Reassign people and change the sequence where possible.
  4. Request support early if the store cannot responsibly recover alone.
  5. Give the dealership a realistic expectation and the next update.
Early communication creates options. Late communication creates excuses.

You are not expected to perform miracles. You are expected to manage reality.
