Removing Window Tint
Film off, glue off, glass clear — and the rear defroster still works.
When to remove it
It varies between dealerships. Before you remove any tint, check with your Detail Manager or dealership management.
What you’ll need
- Steamer (best) or heat gun
- Razor blade in a holder, plus plastic scraper
- Tint glue remover (T-Stripper, ammonia-based)
- Glass cleaner
- Towels to cover door panels, dash and speakers
- Microfiber towels and a trash bag
- Safety glasses and 5-mil nitrile gloves
Before you start
- Factory tint is in the glass and can’t come off. Aftermarket film has an edge you can catch with a fingernail.
- Rear window defroster lines: never use a razor on them. One cut and the defroster is dead. Steam and peel slowly, plastic scraper only.
- Tint glue remover (T-Stripper) is strong ammonia. All doors and windows open. Never spray it inside the car. Never use it near bleach or acids. See Chemical Safety Training, Chapter 3.
- Heat gun gets hot enough to crack glass and melt trim. Keep it moving.
- Used blades go in the blade disposal spot, never loose in the trash or on the dash.
Removal steps
- Cover door panels, dash, speakers and seats with towels.
- Side windows: roll them down an inch to reach the top edge.
- Steam or warm a corner of the film.
- Lift the corner with the blade (not on defroster glass).
- Peel slowly at a low angle, steaming just ahead of the peel. Warm film brings the glue with it.
- Glue left behind? Spray tint glue remover (T-Stripper) onto a folded towel outside the car — never spray it inside the cabin. Press the towel on the glue, let it soften, then scrape: razor on plain glass, plastic scraper on defroster glass.
Finish steps
- Wipe off all glue and glue remover with a damp towel.
- Glass cleaner inside and out.
- Clean drips off the door panels and window seals.
- Test the rear defroster if the vehicle can be started.
Quality check
- No glue haze when you look at the glass at an angle
- Edges and corners clean, no film slivers
- Defroster lines intact
- No ammonia smell or residue on panels
